The next step in the Phillies’ rebuild is to find some damn pitching.
You didn’t need to see Andres Blanco on the mound to know that Matt Klentak and Andy MacPhail have some issues to address with their staff. Through 57 games, the Phillies rank dead last in the majors with a ghastly 5.00 ERA, and their starters are averaging just 5 1/3 innings per start. The lineup, all in all, has offered some encouraging signs, with Aaron Altherr and Tommy Joseph raising hopes that the Phillies might come out of this transitionary stage with a couple of more bats to build around than they initially might’ve thought.
