The Phillies signed outfielder Chris Coghlan, who won the World Series last season with the Cubs, to a minor-league contract, according to a report by MLB.com.
Coghlan, 31, was invited to spring training and has a good chance to break camp on the team's bench. The Phillies, who open spring training Feb. 13, are thin on outfield depth. Coghlan could join Aaron Altherr as the team's reserve outfielders behind starters Odubel Herrera, Howie Kendrick, and Michael Saunders. Coghlan can play all three outfield positions and has experience in the infield.
He rejoined the Cubs last June after being traded in the offseason to Oakland.
