The Mets have signed former Phillies pitching prospect Sam McWilliams.
As it turns out, perennial All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto will not be the first player formerly of the Philadelphia Phillies organization to sign a deal under new New York Mets owner Steve Cohen.
Rather, such title goes to 25-year-old right-handed pitcher Sam McWilliams. On Friday, the Phillies division rivals inked the Orlando, Florida, native to a one-year major-league deal, despite him yet to make his big-league debut.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the $750,000 contract is the largest over the past decade for a player — not coming from Asia — that does not have any Major League service time.
