Jonathan Papelbon earns sole possession of franchise saves record as Phillies top Pirates

PHILADELPHIA — Because the Phillies haven't had many leads heading into the ninth inning this season, Jonathan Papelbon has waited longer than he probably should have to move into sole possession of the franchise's all-time saves list.

He moved to within one of Jose Mesa's record April 27 and tied it last week.

In his first chance to earn save No. 113, he was successful, throwing a scoreless ninth as the Phillies snapped a four-game losing streak and topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2.

It surely wasn't uneventful, though.

Papelbon walked Francisco Cervelli, the first batter of the inning.
