There were no shadows to bother hitters this afternoon, but the Nationals still struggled against Jesús Luzardo, who looked like his best self, striking out 11 hitters in his five innings of work.
Luzardo, coming off an injury-riddled and ineffective 2024, sat 96-98 mph with his fastballs, maxing out at 98.9. He mixed in his new sweeper and slider with plenty of success; 10 of his 11 strikeouts came on the sweeper or slider. Altogether, Luzardo allowed two runs on five hits. Both runs came on a second-inning home run by Keibert Ruiz.
