Jersey's Jason Groome goes to the Red Sox

With the 12th pick Thursday in Major League Baseball's first-year player draft, the Boston Red Sox selected left-handed pitcher Jason Groome of Barnegat High School.

It was a peculiarly fascinating and frustrating final high school season for Groome. There was the 19-strikeout no-hitter in his second outing of the season against Central Regional, the school that produced the Leiter brothers, Mark and Al.

He had double-digit strikeout totals in all six of his starts and finished the season with 90 in just 39 innings. He also posted a 1.13 ERA while allowing two or fewer hits in seven of his eight appearances.
