As foul balls go, this one was loud. Ominous, too.
Hector Neris hasn’t pitched many clean ninth innings for the Phillies lately. So when the closer allowed a long foul ball down the right-field line by New York Mets outfielder Michael Conforto, after giving up a one-out single to Wilmer Flores, it didn’t bode well in a one-run game Friday night.
Sure enough, two pitches later, Conforto clocked a 95-mph sinker into the bleachers in right-center field, and Neris had blown his second save in six days.
