NEW YORK - Ballpark radar guns should soon be reintroduced to Ken "100 Miles" Giles.
Giles, who pitched with diminished velocity early in the season, is again nearing triple digits with his fastball. The Phillies' 24-year-old setup man has eclipsed 98 m.p.h. 10 times over the last week, according to the PITCHf/x pitch-tracking system.
Eight of Giles' 98-plus-m.p.h. heaters this season came in the ninth inning of Wednesday's loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Citizens Bank Park. An 0-2 fastball to Delmon Young that afternoon reached 99 m.p.h. In Monday night's eighth inning at Yankee Stadium, Giles topped out at 98.
