Franco's status for season hinges on swings Wednesday

Maikel Franco will hit off a tee Wednesday afternoon in an indoor batting cage at Citizens Bank Park. Whether the Phillies' promising rookie third baseman still feels discomfort in his left wrist should determine his status for the season's final four weeks.

Franco, 23, visited a doctor on Tuesday. If he swings pain-free on Wednesday, there remains a chance he might return before season's end. If the discomfort lingers, the Phillies will likely shut him down with an eye toward spring training, if not winter ball in his native Dominican Republic.

"If I do something [Wednesday] and I don't feel anything in my wrist, maybe I've got a chance to come back to play," said Franco, who suffered a broken wrist last month.
