In his last start, Zack Wheeler pitched poorly, giving up six runs to the Marlins. And for some reason, he struggled against the Washington Nationals in 2023. So, while on paper, Wheeler vs. the Washington Nationals’ underwhelming lineup was a huge mismatch, there was at least some reason to think it might be tougher than it seemed.
As it turned out, there was little reason to worry. Wheeler pitched 7.1 strong innings, and a few early runs by the offense were enough to give the Phillies a 4-2 victory.
The Phillies struck first against Nats starting pitcher Jake Irvin, with a first inning RBI double by Alec Bohm giving the Phillies an early 1-0 lead.
