PHILADELPHIA — When Cesar Hernandez missed a ball he should have had at second base Tuesday night, he told interim manager Pete Mackanin he was going to burn his glove.
Mackanin believed Hernandez should have caught the ball, too, but he didn't berate Hernandez. He only joked with him, simply suggesting he get a longer glove.
"Little things like that go a long way I think," Mackanin said. "Especially with young guys. Even the old guys."
Something like that might normally go unrecognized but with Jimmy Rollins bringing to light the lack of communication former Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg had with the team, it has become a focus.
