Ruben Amaro Sr., a Gold Glove-winning shortstop who played six seasons for the Phillies and later worked for them in numerous capacities, died Friday in Miami at age 81 after a lengthy illness.
Amaro, who played in the Major Leagues from 1958-69 and for Philadelphia from 1960-65, won the Gold Glove Award in 1964, a year in which he placed 21st in voting for the National League Most Valuable Player Award.
His son, Ruben Amaro Jr., the Phillies' general manager from 2009-15, also played for the Phillies and is currently first-base coach for the Red Sox.
