TAMPA, Fla. - Pete Mackanin glanced Saturday at the numbers and reports on the three pitchers competing to be the Phillies' fifth starter. He met Sunday morning with his coaches to discuss it.
Midway through spring training, the manager is encouraged.
"We tried to figure it out," Mackanin said. "Let me put it this way: It's a problem but it's the kind of problem we were hoping to have. So it's a great problem and we're just going to continue to see them pitch and hope that the best man wins."
Adam Morgan and Brett Oberholtzer, two of the candidates, combined for seven shutout innings Sunday in a 3-0 win over the Yankees.
