In a radio appearance on Philadelphia's 97.5 The Fanatic on Friday, Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro admitted to bluntly telling veteran slugger Ryan Howard that the team would be in better shape "not with him but without him."
Via Matt Lombardo of NJ Advance Media:
"We've talked to Ryan," Amaro said. "And I told him that in our situation it would probably bode better for the organization not with him but without him. With that said if he's with us, then we'll work around him. We'll hope he puts up the kind of numbers that we hope he can and we'll see where it goes from there."
While it's true that the 35-year-old Howard's most productive playing days are behind him, it's still shocking to see Amaro take such a stance with the Phillies stalwart who was a big part in the team's run to a World Series championship in 2008.
