Philadelphia Flyers: Andrew MacDonald Waived

On Monday morning, with one more roster cut looming before opening night, Flyers General Manager Ron Hextall made what he repeatedly called “a tough decision” and announced that the team would be waiving defenseman Andrew MacDonald with the intent of sending him to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

The demotion comes as a surprise to almost everyone. After coming in at the trade deadline two years ago, then General Manager Paul Holmgren signed MacDonald to a lucrative six year, $30 million contract, a move which was met with unease by fans and analysts alike.

The 29-year-old mostly failed to match expectations, leading to frequent neutral-zone breakdowns and, oftentimes, was directly responsible for goals against.
