As a tense overtime ended Wednesday night, public-address announcer Lou Nolan went to the microphone: "The game," he proclaimed to the sellout crowd at the Wells Fargo Center, "will be decided in a shootout."
Loud boos filled the air.
The fans, of course, knew the team's history. Knew the Flyers have the NHL's worst record since the shootouts started in 2005, including a 2-8 mark this season.
Make that 3-8.
In a stunning development, the Flyers won the shootout and jolted the NHL's best team, Washington, 2-1, to climb two points ahead of Detroit for the Eastern Conference's final wild-card spot.
