Flyers top Isles, 5-3, in split-squad game

ALLENTOWN - Dave Hakstol is 1-0 behind the bench.

The new Flyers coach made his NHL debut in Monday's preseason, split-squad game at the PPL Center - the home of the AHL's Phantoms - and led the Flyers to a 5-3 win over the New York Islanders.

On paper, it looked like a sure win for the Flyers before the puck even dropped, as most of the top regular Islanders remained home in Brooklyn to take on the other half of the Flyers.

NHL teams are required to send at least eight regular players to preseason games.
