Flyers' Jake Voracek's own hat trick: Donation to hospitals

Jake Voracek, the Flyers' good-natured right winger, felt guilty.

Nearly 400 fans threw their hats onto the Wells Fargo Center ice Tuesday, thinking Wayne Simmonds had just completed a first-period hat trick.

But it turned out Voracek’s pass to Simmonds deflected off the stick of Colorado defenseman Francois Beauchemin and into the net - as Simmonds was about to swipe it in.

With the naked eye, it appeared Simmonds had scored, so fans heaved their hats onto the ice. When it was announced that Voracek got credit for the goal, he was booed loudly.

“Guys, sorry about the hats,” he said in a between-periods interview that was piped into the arena.
