What you need to know about the NFL's legal tampering period

What is the legal tampering period?

Beginning at noon on Tuesday, teams are allowed to begin contract negotiations with the agents of players who are set to become free agents. No contract can officially be reached until 4 p.m. on Thursday, when the new NFL year begins.

Are there any exceptions?

Yes. A player who was released from his contract can sign at any point. The tampering period is for players whose contracts are expiring. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who was released by the Jets, could sign whenever he wants. Chicago’s Alshon Jeffery must wait until Thursday.
