The NFL is celebrating its 50th Super Bowl on Sunday, with the Carolina playing the Denver Broncos. The late Philadelphia Daily News sportswriter Stan Hochman covered the first Super Bowl, which was played Jan. 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Links to Hochman’s stories appear below.
Coached by Vince Lombardi, for whom the Super Bowl trophy was later named, the Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10, in the 1967 game.
That game was the first title contest between the champions of the rival leagues, the National Football League and the American Football League.
