Sanchez is a good backup, but that doesn't make him starter material

I'VE COVERED pro football in this town for a lot of years and have seen my fair share of quarterback controversies, some real, others just wishful thinking by fans and talk-show people.

Jaworski-Cunningham. Cunningham-McMahon. Cunningham-Brister. Cunningham-Peete. Peete-Detmer. Peete-Detmer-Hoying. McNabb-Garcia. McNabb-Kolb. Vick-Kolb. Vick-Foles.

Everybody loves the backup quarterback. Fans have an idealistic view of him, even if he's already washed out someplace else.

So, I guess I wasn't really surprised Monday when, against my better judgment, I turned off " '70s on 7" on SiriusXM and turned on the sports-talk shows and actually heard some hosts and guests and callers suggesting that Mark Sanchez, the same Mark Sanchez who threw a game-costing red-zone interception Sunday against the Dolphins, might be a better quarterback option for the Eagles right now than Sam Bradford.
