The NFL has changed its rules to try making those 30 seconds following a touchdown a time other than to grab more chips, suds, or both. Attempting an extra point from the 15-yard line means gaining that extra point on the frozen concrete of northerly stadiums in the middle of November just got harder. Kinda.
There was no debate over whether or not the rule should have been changed. Kickers collectively attempted 1,284 extra points last season. They missed eight of them. Extra points had become a mere formality between the scheming and skill required to get the touchdown and the turning over of the ball to the opponent.
