I have confidence that Chip is a really smart guy who has had a couple years now to absorb how the NFL operates. He has taken some risks this offseason, done some things I might not have done, but I do think he has a good idea of what he needs to be successful.
What bothers me about Chip the GM is that I don't think anybody is smart enough to coach an NFL team and be intimately involved in the day-to-day scouting and evaluation process. I think in the draft, if Chip likes a wide receiver because of what he saw in a workout and interview, and new player personnel VP Ed Marynowitz doesn't like the player nearly as much because of what scouts saw in watching him play over a couple of seasons, or what they heard from people on campus — Chip has to be able to defer.
