HOUSTON - Dan Quinn doesn't call the Falcons a team, he calls them a "brotherhood." The coach talks in bumper stickers - "Iron sharpens iron" is one of his favorite sayings. He has a grading system that measures toughness and a weekly competition for black jerseys based on work ethic. He uses modern music to relate.
These are just several of Quinn's culture-building methods, and to the outside world they may seem like a rah-rah, college coach's way to motivate players. In other words, they are ineffective platitudes for professional men who get paid to play football for a living.
