When the Vikings were founded in 1960, general manager Bert Rose picked the team’s colors of purple and gold as a nod to his alma mater, the University of Washington. He also suggested the nickname Vikings because of the region’s Nordic heritage. Rose had been the PR man for the Los Angeles Rams before moving to Minnesota, so he could sell ice cubes to the Eskimos.
