The Eagles have landed.
Returning as champions, as heroes, as harbingers of a new era for Philadelphia, to the underdog city full of fans both speechless and rabid with joy and emotion, the Eagles descended Monday afternoon from a chartered American Airlines flight — but won’t be descending anytime soon from the dreamlike high of Sunday night’s historic win.
After disembarking about 3 p.m., the team carried the Vince Lombardi trophy as they approached a cheering crowd of hundreds watching from behind a chain-link fence. Eagles Owner Jeff Lurie held up the Vince Lombardi trophy as fans went crazy, then passed it to executive vice president Howie Roseman.
