Chip Kelly says Eagles released Evan Mathis to honor his agent’s request

The Philadelphia Eagles released talented but unhappy guard Evan Mathis last week in a surprising roster move, even in light of the fact that the player and the team have been embroiled in a contract dispute that spread over the past two offseasons.

Eagles head coach Chip Kelly on Tuesday insisted the team’s decision to cut ties with the player was done to comply with repeated requests made by Mathis’ agent Drew Rosenhaus to do so.

“We were asked by his agent for a release on multiple occasions,” Kelly said, per a report from ESPN’s Phil Sheridan.
