The Philadelphia Eagles continue to sift through replacement options for former head coach Chip Kelly, and there's a ton of rumors and rumblings surrounding the team advances through the interview process. Here's the latest news & notes from the team's coaching search.
Eagles Pursued Kevin Sumlin
The Eagles made a run at Texas A&M Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin at the beginning of their coaching search, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. However, after leading the Aggies to an 8-5 finish in 2015, Sumlin has made it known that he wants to remain at the college level -- at least for now.
Sumlin, 51, has been at the center of some controversy as of late after two blue-chip quarterbacks -- Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray -- transferred out of Texas A&M due largely in part to instability on the offensive coaching staff. However, Sumlin appears content remaining in College Station with the talent he has in tow and a top-tier recruiting class on the way.
Next Up?
Philadelphia will interview former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin on Monday, per multiple media sources. Adam Gase was considered a shortlist favorite for the job, but he ended up filling the Miami Dolphins' vacancy on Saturday morning.
The Eagles have already interviewed Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo for the HC opening, and it's unclear whether he'd consider moving to Philly as part of a package deal if his old boss, Tom Coughlin, were to be hired.
Speaking Of Coughlin...
Hall of Fame head coach Bill Parcells was a guest on 97.5 The Fanatic on Thursday, and was asked if he thought Tom Coughlin was a good fit in Philly. He didn't take long to think about it.
"I know guys Tom Coughlin's age who know a whole lot more about football than some of the 30-year-olds who are coaching it," Parcells said. “I think his record pretty much speaks for itself.”
Parcells also added that Coughlin is the star of what he views as an underwhelming crop of coaching candidates right now.
"The talent pool is a little bit thin right now,” Parcells said. “The debate is always between the experienced coach vs. the hot coordinator. Nobody knows which of this hot coordinators are eventually going to be successful.
