The Sixers don’t have to flip KJ Martin by the trade deadline

One of the Sixers’ smartest moves this offseason was signing KJ Martin to a two-year, $16 million contract. It was an obvious overpay at the time, but that was intentional.

One of the issues with the Sixers’ top-heavy roster construction is that they don’t have much expendable salary to send out in trades. Paul George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey are all earning at least $35 million this season, but Caleb Martin is their next-highest-paid player at $8.15 million. In essence, the Sixers overpaid KJ Martin to give themselves an $8 million contract that they could flip for another rotation player by the Feb.
