Smallwood: By the numbers, Embiid is an All-Star-caliber player

AROUND THIS TIME 20 years ago, I wrote a column saying that dynamic Sixers rookie Allen Iverson deserved consideration for selection to the 1997 NBA All-Star Game.

Allen Iverson finished third in the fan balloting for Eastern Conference guards, behind Michael Jordan and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway.

Iverson's 567,641 votes were the eight highest total in the East, but Eastern Conference coach Doug Collins, of the Chicago Bulls, did not pick him as a reserve.

Voting for the 2017 All-Star Game opened on Christmas Day, and the Sixers are making a strong push encouraging fans to vote rookie center Joel Embiid into the Eastern Conference starting five.
