The bridge to modern basketball was a “stretch-post player” before the term existed.
A lifelong Syracuse National and Philadelphia 76ers four-man, Dolph Schayes scored over 19,000 points and amassed over 11,000 rebounds. Schayes was also a twelve-time NBA All-Star and six-time first team All-NBA. Eventually, he’d become the 76ers coach. In 1966 he was named NBA Coach of the Year for the 76ers. He is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
The NBA’s opening season was Dolph Schayes’ sophomore campaign with the Nats where he embarked on 12 consecutive years as the leading scorer.
