Murphy: Little choice but to trust Sixers on Joel Embiid's knee

I tend to regard most institutions with a healthy degree of skepticism. I wouldn't consider it distrust so much as an understanding that the self-validating nature of power can lead to decisions that draw their legitmacy not from empirical evidence but from the possession of power itself. Call it the "Because I said so" tendency, first-cousin of the "Appeal to authority" fallacy.

One of the exceptions: doctors. I bring this up because of the questions that have inevitably begun to percolate regarding the Sixers' handling of Joel Embiid. Two days after he returned from a two-game absence due to knee soreness, the rookie big man and social media icon is back on the injury report, with the Sixers listing him as questionable for Monday night's game against the Kings at the Wells Fargo Center.
