Michael Jordan best summed up the motivation nearly 15 years ago.

In 1998, Jordan left the game in the best way possible – retiring after hitting the game-winning shot to beat the Utah Jazz and get his sixth NBA title with the Chicago Bulls and earn his sixth NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award.

However, in 2001, despite making the transition from the court to the front office, Jordan announced that he was stepping down from his role as President of Basketball Operations for the Washington Wizards to make a comeback as a player for the Wizards.
