Young Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid will likely miss the 2015-16 NBA season following a second scheduled surgery on his right foot, per multiple media reports.
“I would say there’s a great possibility that Embiid won’t play next year,” a source told The Inquirer. “Just think how long they sat him when they thought he was healthy.
The team is still deciding whether to have the surgery in North Carolina or at the New York Hospital of Special Surgery.
Per The Inquirer's report, "the Sixers are planning as if Embiid won’t play this season, sources say. Another source said the franchise is concerned that this setback could be career-threatening."
The seven-foot Cameroon native missed what would have been his rookie season in 2014-15 after undergoing surgery to repair a stress fracture in his right foot. On Thursday, GM Sam Hinkie was noncommittal about either Embiid's immediate future (an update on which is likely to be announced by the team as early as Monday) or his status for the 2015-16 campaign.
"No change as of yet," Hinkie said. "A number of meetings are happening about that, even one today. But we have meetings almost every day about that. We don't have anything ready to announce."
