The Philadelphia 76ers will release decrepit big man Elton Brand when the free agency period begins.
Brand is somehow owed $18 million next season, but the 76ers will use their amnesty clause to avoid Brand's contract counting against their salary cap or luxury tax. Brand still receives the money he is due.
The 76ers made the move in order to sign free agent shooting guard Nick Young. Young focuses on the shooting part of the shooting guard position, and likes to loiter around the 3 point line.
The money saved in the Brand release will also be used to sign center Spencer Hawes to a long term, most likely overpriced deal. Hawes will command $8 million a year or more because he is 7 feet tall and can occasionally hit mid range jumpers. He also likes to grab a rebound or two every now and then.
The Brand release was a move that had to be made if the 76ers want to improve their 8th place eastern conference finish from last year.
