The Philadelphia 76ers nearly traded Jahlil Okafor to the Boston Celtics in a sign-and-trade for Amir Johnson this weekend, but the deal fell through when Johnson signed with Philly as a free agent, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
There had actually been talks—sources tell me—that there had been talks between Philadelphia and Boston on a sign-and-trade, that would have sent Jahlil Okafor to the Celtics, and they would have done a sign-and-trade for Amir Johnson, but that never materialized.
Boston has had talks with Okafor for really almost a year, several months certainly back to the last trade deadline. But that didn’t materialize, they just did the straight one-year deal with Amir Johnson.
Philadelphia had been trying to trade Okafor due to their logjam in the frontcourt, which is something that Johnson only adds to. As such, it becomes increasingly likely that they will part with Okafor this offseason.
It remains to be seen if there are any serious suitors for Okafor, but with his role with the 76ers diminishing, his time with the franchise appears to be ending.
Johnson averaged 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game last season, while Okafor averaged 11.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
