The Philadelphia 76ers have already made a few big free agent signings in J.J. Redick and Amir Johnson, but can still make some moves to free up even more cap space, like renouncing Tiago Splitter's contract or trading Jahlil Okafor. If they decide to make those moves (or others) to add another piece from the open market, who will they look at? Here are three options:
1) Jonathon Simmons
Philadelphia is interested in Simmons, but with a $9 million offer from the San Antonio Spurs already, it's going to take a more lucrative deal to lure him away. The 76ers can do that, and he'd provide a gritty wing defender they need. Plus, coming from a winning franchise like the Spurs, he could help establish a new culture and mentor Philly's young players.
Simmons averaged 6.2 points per game in 17.8 minutes per game off the bench this year but thrived in the playoffs - especially when Kawhi Leonard was injured - averaging 10.5 points in 20.4 minutes per game.
2) Tony Allen
The Sacramento Kings have made it a point this offseason to sign veteran players to help bring their young players along, and this would be a similar signing for Philly. The 35-year-old would help the Sixers address their need for backcourt depth while giving them a defensive stopper on the perimeter. He averaged 9.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game last season for the Memphis Grizzlies.
3) Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
This is the least likely of the bunch, but something the Sixers may consider. Caldwell-Pope is now an unrestricted free agent after the Detroit Pistons renounced their rights to him yesterday, and would give Philly young knockdown shooter who would help space the floor.
However, KCP turned down a five-year, $80 million offer from Detroit because he thought he could get a bigger offer from another team, but that has yet to be the case. The Sixers are limited in how much they can offer him, so if a bit of a bidding war were to take place, Philadelphia would lose.
