The Penn State football player who for more than 50 years held the school record for the longest return of an intercepted pass has died.
Wayne F. Berfield, 78, died Tuesday in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., following an extended illness.
He put his name in the Penn State record books in 1958 in a game at Boston University when he intercepted a pass and returned it 98 yards.
That record stood until 2012 when Michael Mauti ran back an interception for 99 yards against Illinois.
Whitey, as Berfield was called because of his light colored hair, played center and defense for Joe Paterno.
