STATE COLLEGE -- For the first time since 2008, Penn State has recorded a punt return touchdown.
It came midway through the first quarter during Saturday's 2017 opener against Akron, as starting punt returner DeAndre Thompkins, who earned the job following a summer camp battle with a handful of teammates, zagged left, shook free from a would-be tackler, cut the other way, and then took off en route to the end zone for a 61-yard score.
The last Penn State punt return for a touchdown came back in 2008, when Derrick Williams did it against Wisconsin.
