University of Maryland band drops pro-Confederacy state song before games

When Penn State plays the University of Maryland Terrapins Nov. 25 in College Park, fans won't hear that university's band play the pro-confederacy Maryland state song in the pre-game show.

The Maryland band director announced this week that "Maryland, My Maryland," sung to the tune of "O Tannenbaum," will no longer be played in its pre-game show, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The nine-verse song includes lyrics calling for action against President Abraham Lincoln and "northern scum," reports the Baltimore Sun.

The action follows movements to take down confederate statues in the south, and protests Aug.
