STATE COLLEGE -- You see Aaron Rodgers do this. And Tom Brady and a few other experienced pro pocket quarterbacks.
But you do not see zone-read QBs often exhibit a certain skill that we've seen repeatedly this year from Penn State's Trace McSorley, a rookie college starter.
It's the ability to step up in the pocket, see open space in front of him and resist running into that void for easy land yardage. Instead, McSorley, will use that clear frame of vision to scan downfield, pull up just in front of the scrimmage stick and zing a throw deep downfield looking for the big strike that rings up points and changes games.
