Tom Oates: Under Paul Chryst, UW football team doesn't overlook weak opponents

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Recent history tells us the University of Wisconsin’s football game with Illinois today is a slam dunk.

First, it’s on the road.

Second, it’s against an unranked team.

In three seasons under coach Paul Chryst, UW has excelled in both situations, routinely beating teams in their stadiums and winning the games it is supposed to win. Those two trends will coalesce today when the fifth-ranked Badgers, who have all but clinched the Big Ten Conference’s West Division title, take on the last-place Fighting Illini at Memorial Stadium.

Unlike some past UW teams, this one relishes going on the road and seems impervious to letdowns.
