Strong performances from Shep Garner, Brandon Taylor couldn’t pull Penn State basketball to win over Michigan

The morning of Penn State’s 79-72 loss to Michigan at Madison Square Garden, Nittany Lions coach Patrick Chambers wasn’t sure if guard Shep Garner would play.

Battling a foot injury, Garner didn’t shoot well in the three games leading up to Saturday’s matchup against the Wolverines. In that span, he made 20.8 percent of his field goal attempts, which is 16.2 percent worse than his seasonal shooting percentage.

Yet Garner played Saturday, putting forth his best shooting effort in weeks. He tallied 22 points and nailed five 3-pointers.

“I was proud of [Garner’s] toughness and of his grit,” Chambers said.
