Seifarth leads Penn State men’s ice hockey out of a losing streak

When third-string goaltender John Seifarth woke up the morning of Penn State’s series opener versus Colgate, he didn’t expect to earn his first win as a Division I NCAA hockey player.

With starting goaltender Arsenii Sergeev sidelined with a lower-body injury, Seifarth was made the primary backup. The club hockey call-up recorded his first collegiate minutes against then–No. 5 Michigan on Nov. 23 when he replaced Noah Grannan in the third frame.

“It couldn’t have been a worse situation to walk into,” coach Guy Gadowsky said. “(Seifarth) handled it extremely well.”

Though the Nittany Lions went on to lose the game 10-6, Seifarth — who allowed three goals on eight shots — was given the opportunity to start in goal the following Tuesday against Colgate.
