The youth movement in the Penn State program has been solidified in a major way.
In just her second tournament as a member of the Nittany Lions, freshman Samantha Smith captured the singles flight B title over the weekend at the Cissie Leary Invitational on the campus of Pennsylvania, running through five opponents en route to the first major win of her college career.
Smith, who was only forced to a third set once in her conquest, took care of business against a variety of opponents. After defeating competition from both St. John’s and Yale in the rounds of 32 and 16, Smith came head-to-head against one of the Quakers’ own, flight B third-ranked Marta Kowalska.
