The Penn State and Pittsburgh rivalry spans across decades and sports.
However, after winning Saturday night’s game in four sets (20-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-18) to advance to the regional match in the NCAA tournament, coach Russ Rose – who is from Chicago and has been a Nittany Lion for almost 40 years – had nothing but good things to say about his team’s in-state competition.
“I thought it was a very competitive match,” Rose said. “[The Panthers are] great opponent[s]...It’s not the old ‘Pitt-Penn State’ thing in the old days when they were all eastern counterparts. They’re in a different conference, we’re in a different conference and we play [each other] in the spring.
