Penn State track, field finishes strong at first day of Big Ten championships

Penn State began the 2017 Big Ten outdoor track and field championships strong, securing four silver medals and qualifying five athletes for three different event finals later in the championship meet.

On the track, Jillian Hunsberger and Timothy McGowan placed second in their respective 10,000-meter events — Hunsberger with a time of 33:55.55 and McGowan with a time of 29.38.64.

On the field, Michael Shuey and Morgan Shigo secured second place in the javelin and hammer throws, respectively. Shuey hit 240 feet-seven inches (73.35 meters) while Shigo posted a school-record mark of 222-11 (67.94 meters), breaking his own record from earlier this outdoor season.
