What Penn State third-year safety Ayron Monroe lacks in experience he makes up for in athleticism and confidence.

Early indications are that the Nittany Lions are prepared to open the season with senior Troy Apke at safety opposite fellow safety Marcus Allen, the team's leader in tackles last season.

PSU is replacing Malik Golden at the safety spot.

Apke appeared in all 14 games in 2016 and made a spot start, finishing with 28 stops. The converted wideout also drew praise from head coach James Franklin at the start of August camp.

"A guy that I think is going to have a huge year for us is [Troy] Apke,'' Franklin said.
