Penn State President Eric Barron, marking a year in office, gave an upbeat report to school trustees today, citing record applications, double-digit growth in funded faculty research and other institutional gains.

The board also approved an interim operating and maintenance budget of $4.65 billion intended to keep the university operating beyond July 1 until a finalized spending plan for 2015-16 can be approved.

At today's session, the board was also expected to appoint some new trustees and fill some new seats on the board that will expand the number of trustees at Penn State to 38, including 36 who can vote.
