Penn State notebook: Top point guard picks Nittany Lions

Penn State basketball won a key in-state recruiting battle Monday and it’s one that could help shape the future of the program.

Penn State secured a verbal commitment from four-star point guard Tony Carr, the top-rated prospect in Pennsylvania. Carr, from Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic high school, chose the Nittany Lions in a ceremony at his high school, picking Penn State over scholarship offers from Maryland, Temple, Providence and Southern Methodist, among others.

The 6-foot-5, 185-pound prospect is ranked 53rd in the country according to Rivals.com and is ranked 39th by Scout.com. He is the first Rivals four-star prospect to pick Penn State basketball since at least 2002.
